Our Philosophy of Care

At the Claire M. Lintilhac Nurse-Midwifery Service, we believe pregnancy and birth are normal, healthy events in the life of a woman and her family. We believe that everyone deserves a satisfying and safe birth experience.

Through education and communication, our nurse-midwives enable you to make important decisions about your care. We facilitate, not dictate, the birthing process and intervene only when your safety is compromised. Our ultimate goal is to provide excellence in care, while staying true to your needs and the needs of your family.

Working with a Nurse-Midwife
Midwifery is a tradition of women caring for women during pregnancy and childbirth.

In fact, midwife means “with woman”. Certified nurse-midwives are experienced women who are educated to rigorous standards in both nursing and midwifery and are board-certified.

Nurse-Midwives are licensed as advanced registered nurse-practitioners and hold a master’s degree.  We provide care for women through their pregnancies, attend their births providing hands on labor support, catch their baby, and provide physical and emotional support after the birth and with breastfeeding.  Nurse-Midwives are experts in normal healthy pregnancy and birth care. Women in our care birth their babies in-hospital at Fletcher Allen.  We do not provide home births.

The Best of Both Worlds
In addition to individualized, nurturing, and low-intervention care, we follow the standard of care developed by the American College of Ob/Gyn.  Standardized lab testing, ultrasounds and genetic testing are available.  Through our practice, you will have access to expert Maternal Fetal Medicine and Obstetric physicians and a state-of-the-art fetal diagnostic center.  We work in collaboration with these obstetricians.  They are immediately available for consultation during your pregnancy or if a problem arises during your labor or birth.

Trusting relationships and satisfying birth experiences are emphasized.  We encourage questions and educate you so that you can make the best decisions for yourself about your health, pregnancy, and birth.

Our History

The Claire M. Lintilhac Nurse-Midwifery Service is a full-scope service employing 5 nurse-midwives.  The Service honors the memory of Claire M. Lintilhac, a British trained nurse-midwife raised in China.  In 1968, Mrs. Lintilhac worked with Dr. John Maeck, Chairman of University Associates in Ob/Gyn at the University of Vermont, to hire a nurse-midwife for the practice.  Forty years later the nurse-midwifery service has evolved into a program with three areas of interest: clinical practice, education and research.

Clinically, the major goal of our service is to provide individualized maternity care focusing on the needs of the family.  Full-scope midwifery care is provided which includes prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, immediate newborn, lactation, routine gynecologic care, and family planning.

Academic Medicine Informed by Teaching & Research

In addition to clinical responsibilities, the nurse-midwives serve as part- time faculty at the University of Vermont’s College of Medicine, and act as preceptors for students from various Nurse-Midwifery Educational Programs.  As educators, the nurse-midwives are experts in normal, healthy pregnancy and birth.  They are responsible for teaching the principles and skills involved in the process of the normal events of pregnancy, labor and delivery, postpartum and breastfeeding.
A research component within the Lintilhac Nurse-Midwifery Service continues to thrive.  See more information on nurse-midwifery research.
