About Fletcher Allen's Birthing Center
As the region's only academic medical center, Fletcher Allen has an unmatched ability to provide the expert care that can make all the difference in your birthing experience. As health care providers grounded in Vermont values, we create a supportive environment which offers a variety of childbirth alternatives to the 2,000 families who deliver their babies at our hospital each year.
The Claire M. Lintilhac Birthing Center is located on the 7th floor of the McClure building. During the day, patients should park in the underground at the Ambulatory Care Center and check-in at the main registration desk on the 3rd floor. Overnight arrivals should park and register at the Emergency Department. Our security system requires all patients and visitors to be cleared by staff before entering the Center.
Our labor lounge offers beautiful views of Lake Champlain, providing a pleasant and calming environment for women in labor and their birthing partners. A separate lounge nearby provides a comfortable waiting area for families and visitors.
Our seven spacious labor and delivery suites offer women and their partners a private, soothing environment with warm colors, plenty of natural light and great views of Lake Champlain, the Adirondack mountains, and the UVM campus. All rooms are equipped with the latest technology, private baths with large soaking tubs, and comfortable seating. Read an overview of the labor and delivery experience at Fletcher Allen.
One of our birthing rooms is equipped for water deliveries. It has all of the features and amenities of our other rooms with the addition of a specially designed tub. Fletcher Allen caregivers are experienced in these kind of deliveries and are happy to work with you to accommodate your personal birthing choices.
We have a long and proud history of including a variety of
providers and delivery methods into our labor and delivery services. Read more about our special services and
affiliations, research activities and history here.
Fletcher Allen's Mother-Baby Unit serves women and newborns as well as those with high-risk pregnancies who need special care and bed rest before and after giving birth. Located on the 5th floor of the Shepardson building, the unit offers semi-private rooms, a newborn nursery and a family lounge.
Mother-Baby is staffed by a team of nurses who specialize in ante-partum, post-partum and newborn nursing. They're also trained in lactation support and neonatal resuscitation. A lactation consultant is available weekdays for those mothers needing extra help and support. Learn more about breastfeeding support at Fletcher Allen.
In the event of complications, the Center contains two state-of-the-art operating rooms for Cesarean births and other complicated deliveries. If needed, our care teams have instant access to the only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in the state of Vermont. The operating rooms feature all the advanced technology you'd expect and plenty of space to accommodate multiple births. Please visit our patient guide to the operating room.
