The prostate is a gland in the male reproductive system located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum that is about the size of a walnut and surrounds the urethra (the tube that empties urine from the bladder). The prostate gland produces fluid that is one of the parts of semen.

What is Prostate Cancer?

Prostate cancer is among the most common cancers diagnosed in men. In the U.S., one in six men will be diagnosed in his lifetime. 

While no one will say facing prostate cancer is easy, the good news is with increased awareness and screening, more men are diagnosed early. That means most cancers are found while still localized in the prostate before the cancer has spread.

The exact cause of prostate cancer is unknown, but several factors can increase a man’s risk of developing it, including: 

  • Age - the risk increases as you age
  • Race - black men have a higher risk of prostate cancer and it’s also often more aggressive or advanced
  • Family history - father or brother with prostate cancer
  • Obesity

Prostate Cancer Symptoms

Early prostate cancer symptoms may not appear, but advanced prostate cancer symptoms include:

  • Difficulty urinating
  • Weaker stream of urine
  • Blood in the urine
  • Blood in the semen
  • Swollen legs
  • Pelvic area discomfort 
  • Bone pain

Some of these symptoms can also be caused by other less serious conditions.  Nonetheless, reach out to your doctor right away.  The earlier prostate cancer is diagnosed and treated the better your outcome.
