Information on how the organ transplant process works and what happens during each visit. You will be working closely with your transplant coordinator from the beginning to the end of this process.
Preparing for Your Transplant Surgery
Waiting for transplantation can be both an exciting and stressful time. Many details must be arranged prior to being listed to ensure the smoothest possible outcome for you and your family. The following will guide you in your preparation.
Sources of Healthy Kidneys
Kidneys can come from three sources: a relative (living related donor), a spouse or friend (living unrelated donor), or a person who has died whose family agrees to donate his/her organs for transplantation (cadaveric, cadaver donor, or deceased donor).
The Transplant Operation
All the preparation and testing have led you to the moment where you and an available organ are brought together. The following will provide you with some information about the transplant operation procedure.
After Transplant Surgery
After the transplant surgery operation, you will be cared for in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) for 24-48 hours. Then, you will be transferred to recovery for the remainder of your hospital stay.
Types of Immunosuppressive Medications
Immunosuppressive medications are drugs that reduce the risk of your body rejecting the new organ after transplant. Immunosuppressive regimens are tailored for each patient and are essential for a successful organ transplant.
