Welcome to the Division of Transplantation Surgery and Immunology
Transplant surgery is evolving at a tremendous rate. The spectacular success of organ transplantation over the last few decades has saved, lengthened, and immeasurably improved thousands of patient lives. The first organ transplant surgery at Fletcher Allen occurred on March 6th, 1972. Today, there are numerous ways of receiving an organ transplant or having transplant surgery, a medical development that further underscores the rapid evolution of the field of transplantation surgery.
Kidney Transplant Surgery
Currently, we provide the following variations of kidney transplant surgeries: deceased donor, living donor transplant, high risk/highly sensitized protocols, and pediatric kidney transplant surgery. We also offer laparoscopic nephrectomy to living donors.
Pancreas Transplant Surgery
Additionally we perform transplantation surgery in any of the following combinations: simultaneous kidney and pancreas surgery, pancreas after kidney, and pancreas transplant surgery alone. These pancreas transplants are done for patients with Type 1 diabetes mellitus who have secondary complications. A successful pancreas transplant means that the recipient's glucose remains normal without insulin injections.
A major part of our clinical efforts are also dedicated to liver surgery and developing a liver transplant program. Our transplant surgeons are trained in liver transplantation and liver surgery, and hence are very experienced at liver surgery.
The Division of Transplantation Surgery and Immunology is also very active in cutting-edge research in Transplantation and Transplantation Immunology.
