The Preoperative Evaluation
Prior to your surgery, it is necessary to complete a pre-operative evaluation with one of our nurses to be sure that you are optimally prepared for your anesthesia. This evaluation allows our skilled nurses to gather information about your health history, and to provide you with the information you will need in advance of your procedure.
Depending on your specific conditions and past medical history your assessment may be completed over the phone or onsite at Fletcher Allen's main campus in Burlington. Your surgeon will let you know which is right for you.
Telephone Evaluation
If you are scheduled for a phone evaluation, then a nurse will call you at a date and time scheduled by your surgeon's office. The purpose of this call is to review your health history and discharge instructions. This is also a great opportunity for you to ask questions about what you can expect at Fletcher Allen on the day of your surgery. Please be prepared with the following information for your telephone evaluation:
- Medication list and dosages
- Surgical history
- Pacemaker ID card
The evaluation will take approximately thirty minutes to complete, but may vary according to your needs.
Onsite Evaluation
This type of evaluation takes place at Fletcher Allen's main campus. After checking into registration, you will be directed to the Surgery and Outpatient Services area on Level 3 (adjacent to the main lobby). You can expect this appointment to last up to two hours depending on the type of testing ordered by your physician.
Surgical Admissions
The Surgical Admissions area is where you will be prepared on the day of your surgery. Here, you will meet with a pre-operative nurse who will update your health history and start an IV (Intravenous fluid). If an IV is needed on a child, it will usually be started in the operating room after the child is asleep. You will also meet with a member of the Anesthesia staff who will finalize your plan for anesthesia.
Other Preparations
In order to make your experience as seamless as possible the pre-operative staff will consult with your surgeon's office to ensure all necessary documentation is available for your surgery, and whenever necessary, can coordinate with support services such as pastoral care, case management and patient and family services.
When you arrive at the hospital, the registration staff will direct you to our location.
Fasting
In some cases fasting might be required before your surgery. Your physician's office will inform you if you need to fast before your surgery. Here are our current fasting instructions.
