• Regional Anesthesia
Anesthesia used to numb a specific area of the body requiring surgery, such as spinal anesthesia or epidural anesthesia used in childbirth and prostate surgery.
• Pediatric Anesthesia
The practice of anesthesia specifically developed to alleviate pain in infants and children undergoing surgical or other painful procedures. • Obstetrical Anesthesia
Anesthesia services specifically designed for women during childbirth. A wide range of options are available to alleviate pain. Anesthesiologists with advanced training in obstetric medicine work closely with each patient to address their specific needs.
• Neuroanesthesia
The use of anesthesia during neurological procedures and diagnostic tests such as traditional electroencephalogram (EEG), which records electrical activity in the brain, and evoked potential studies, procedures that examine nerve pathways.
• Cardiothoracic Anesthesia
Anesthesia care specifically designed for patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery provided by anesthesiologists with advanced training in cardiac medicine. An important tool used in this type of anesthesia is transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), which uses ultrasound technology to provide a clear picture of the heart while patients are asleep under general anesthesia or sedated.
• Vascular Anesthesia
Anesthesia care designed for patients undergoing vascular procedures and surgery to the blood vessels. Practitioners have an advanced level of training in vascular medicine.
• Critical Care Anesthesia
Advanced anesthesia care provided in Fletcher Allen's intensive care units. Critical care anesthetists are specially trained to treat patients with critical, life-threatening illnesses.
• Ultrasound Guided Anesthesia
The use of ultrasound technology to guide the delivery of anesthetics. Ultrasound allows the anesthesiologist to visualize the anatomy, including blood vessels and nerves in the area he or she is working. This is most frequently used in the placement of central lines (intravenous access in the major veins of the neck or under the collarbone) or for peripheral nerve blocks done to numb a particular section of the body.
