What is Rehabilitation?
Rehabilitation is recovering; regaining your independence; getting back to doing the things you like to do. This may mean learning new ways of doing old things such as walking, bathing, making dinner, having fun.
What is the Rehabilitation Center?
The Rehabilitation Center is a restoring place where you can work with a rehabilitation doctor, nurses and therapists to regain as much function as possible. It has all the benefits of a hospital; around the clock care by registered nurses, daily visits with your rehabilitation team and care, as needed, by a hospital internal medicine specialist.
When will I come?
You will come to the Rehabilitation Center when you and your medical team agree that you are ready.
How will I get there?
If you are coming from Fletcher Allen or another facility, you will come by a special van or an ambulance, or you may come by car from home.
How long will I stay?
Your length of stay will be determined by your rehab team. Some people stay a week or less (for example following hip or knee replacement). Others stay 2-4 weeks. How long you stay depends upon you, the reason you are in Rehab, your family and the conditions you will face when you go home.
What is a typical day like?
We tailor the program to meet your needs. Typically you will dress in your own clothes and have meals in the dining room. You will spend the mornings and afternoons with your doctors, nurses and therapists. We encourage your family to visit and to learn along with you. We even have recreational opportunities.
Where will I go when I leave the Rehabilitation Center?
Most people go directly home, but a few need to continue rehabilitation at another facility. Our social workers will help you arrange for any support services needed.
What about follow up care?
Our rehabilitation doctors and therapists are available for follow-up appointments in our Rehabilitation Outpatient Center located at the Fanny Allen Campus. We can also arrange for home health services. You will probably also return to your primary care doctor or other specialist.
Should I go to a nursing home, my own home or come to the Rehabilitation Center?
If you are not able to participate with active therapy, you may need to go to a nursing home to regain some strength before coming to the Rehabilitation Center. You may, however, be ready to go directly home from the hospital. Our referral coordinators and rehabilitation doctors will help you and your family make the appropriate decision.
