Fletcher Allen’s Radiology Department offers state-of-the-art Magnetic Resonance Imaging capabilities. Our department has the latest equipment in MR technology, including one 3 Tesla (3T) Philips MRI scanner, one General Electric Excite 1.5 T system, and one General Electric Signa LX 1.5 T system. The 3T technology significantly changes the way scanning takes place by enabling technologists to acquire higher quality scans that can be carried out at a much faster speed than ever before.

The 3T is used to scan multiple anatomical regions and major organ systems, including cardiac, breast, abdominal, musculoskeletal, and neurological imaging.
With 3T MRI technology, Radiologists can analyze blood flow of stroke victims and quantify regions of the brain at risk. The scanner enables Radiologists to create detailed images of structures in the body such as minute vessels in the brain, nerves and cartilage. The detail and quality of these images is unparalleled.
Using the 3T MRI scanner, our Radiologists and Cardiologists can examine the size and thickness of the heart’s chambers and calculate the extent of damage caused by a heart attack or heart disease. Findings from these images can dramatically affect the course of treatment for patients.
To utilize the benefits of improved image quality of our equipment to its fullest potential, The University of Vermont in conjunction with Fletcher Allen has implemented a functional MRI lab. With the latest software and hardware in the field of functional MRI, our Technologists, Radiologists, and Researchers are able to study brain activity in response to specific stimuli including sight, sound, or finger tapping. This "brain mapping" is achieved by setting up the MRI scanner parameters so that the increased blood flow to the activated areas of the brain will show up on Functional MRI images.
The MRI department is committed to providing state-of-the-art imaging technology with compassionate and knowledgeable faculty and staff. All staff technologists are registered in MRI by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or are MRI Registry eligible. All Radiologists in our department have completed imaging fellowships specific to MRI. Our team of Radiologists and Technologists work together to provide our patients with the best possible experience in our department.
