The projects of the Fletcher Allen/UVM HPV Working Group have been funded through a grant from the Vermont Cancer Center.
Human
Papilloma Virus (HPV) is the most prevalent of all Sexually Transmitted
Diseases (STDs), with an estimated 5.5 million new cases arising in the
United States each year. Individuals infected with HPV may not
experience any symptoms at all. However, HPV may cause genital warts,
precancerous changes and/or cervical, penile and anal cancer.
Sexually
active adolescents are biologically at higher risk for catching HPV
than adults. It is important for adolescents to know the facts about
HPV, and to understand the significant health consequences that can
result from an HPV infection.
The HPV WORKING GROUP was initiated
by the Pathology Department at Fletcher Allen Health Care and the UVM
College of Medicine to address the community and statewide need for HPV
education. As a first step, we have developed an HPV educational program
(written at the level of 9th and 10 grade).
