Overview

Clinical Microbiology serves as the primary reference lab for our region. We offer testing in all areas of Microbiology including Bacteriology, Anaerobic Bacteriology, Mycology, Mycobacteriology, Parasitology, Virology and Chlamydia testing. We have 24 employees and perform 162,000 tests annually.

Highlights

Identification of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria with appropriate susceptibility testing.

Screening for vancomycin resistant enterococci, methicillin resistant staphylococci, and resistant pneumococci.

Legionella culture and serotyping using immunofluorescence.

"Special Microbiology" testing includes Virology (culture, CMV antigenemia, herpes typing, HPV testing and antigen detection ), Mycology (culture, smears, cryptococcal antigen), Mycobacteriology (culture, smears and DNA probes for culture confirmation), and Parasitology (routine, antigen detection, blood parasite exams, arthropod and worm ID).

Chlamydia trachomatis testing includes direct specimen detection with amplification (transcription mediated amplification) and culture.

Training of infectious disease fellows, medical students, pathology residents, dermatology fellows and bio-medical technology students from the University of Vermont.

Ongoing collaborative research with pharmaceutical companies, diagnostic companies, and other universities. *Regional reference testing for esoteric Microbiology.
