Level I Trauma Center

Fletcher Allen is a Level I Trauma Center, which means we meet or exceed strict national standards in providing the highest level of specialty care to trauma patients.

As a referral center serving the Vermont and northern New York with advanced-level trauma surgery and critical care, we are ready around the clock, 365 days a year, for any type of emergency. We care for approximately 1,000 trauma victims each year—people who have been critically injured in car, hunting or skiing accidents, as well as fires, drownings or shootings, among other incidents.

Tele-trauma

Another way our trauma surgery specialists serve patients throughout the region is through the use of technology, which places Fletcher Allen specialists with advanced expertise in the emergency rooms of 12 community hospitals in rural locations. Using two-way interactive video, this technology, known as telemedicine, allows the local provider and the trauma surgeon to interact and develop a care plan when every second counts.
