Emergency Medicine Senior Elective

Emergency Medicine Senior Elective at Fletcher Allen

Emergency Medicine is involved in teaching both medical students and residents. Emergency Medicine is a Senior Elective. Up to six students per month rotate through the Emergency Department where they are given didactic lectures as well as an opportunity for a great deal of hands on clinical work with Emergency Department patients.

Orientation for house staff and students alike involves viewing a 30-minute video, reviewing a packet of written information about the Department and a personalized tour from one of the senior RN's. All patients seen by the residents and the students are presented to an emergency medicine attending prior to patient disposition. Residents and students are encouraged to see patients primarily and proceed with development of a treatment plan prior to presentation.

Students work 12-hour shifts. Monday through Friday students attend a 1-hour didactic teaching session which is organized around case presentations.

During the month long rotation, students also ride with a local ambulance squad and deliver an oral presentation to the ED staff.
