What to Expect
A multidisciplinary tem including a physician, neuropsychologist and social worker will evaluate the patient. Family members are encouraged to attend all appointments.
The initial evaluation is approximately three hours in length, and will include a thorough medical history, physical examination and neuropsychological testing. This test will examine relationships between the nervous system, and mental functions such as language, memory, attention and perception. Appropriate outpatient laboratory and radiological examinations may be scheduled.
During the second visit, the results of the evaluation are discussed with the patient and family and a therapeutic plan is outlined.
The patient is then followed at regular intervals to monitor progress. Treatment will be carefully coordinated with the primary care physician. Family members receive ongoing counseling for managing the care of the cognitively impaired relative. The patient can also receive supportive counseling for management of their symptoms.
