MRI
You will be having an MRI or Magnetic Resonance Imaging study. The MRI is a big machine that takes pictures while you are lying on a narrow bed with a seatbelt.
The room you are in will not be dark. The bed has a nice soft mattress and it is very important that you lie very still without moving. Otherwise the pictures will be blurry. The bed is 7 feet long. It will move you forward into a tunnel. When it stops, the machine will make loud banging sounds. That means it is working.
The MRI takes pictures of the organs inside your body using a big magnet and radio waves. It is connected to a computer in the next room where the pictures will go. Sometimes the MRI machine is slow and it might take 30 - 45 minutes, depending on how many pictures you need taken.
Mom and Dad can go in with you for the pictures. If you have any questions or you are scared, you can talk to the technologist, they are your friend. If you want to talk to someone before you come in for the study, please call Fletcher Allen Radiology at (802) 847-3593.
