Determining your Treatment Options
Vulvar cancer treatment depends on the type and stage of the cancer as well as other factors such as your age, overall health and personal preferences. Your team of doctors will take all of that into account with the treatments they recommend.
Surgery is the most common treatment for vulvar cancer.
- Excision - This procedure cuts out the cancer and a small amount of nearby, normal tissue to make sure all of the cancer has been removed. Sometimes this surgery is also called wide local excision or radical excision.
- Vulvectomy - Vulvar cancer surgery can remove all (radical vulvectomy) or part (partial vulvectomy) of the vulva. Depending on how much tissue the surgeons remove, they may graft skin from another area of your body.
- Pelvic Exenteration - This is an extensive surgery that removes most of your pelvic organs if your cancer has spread or come back (recurred).
Chemotherapy treats cancer by destroying cancer cells using different types of medication.
Radiation therapy uses high-energy beams, such as X-rays and protons, to destroy cancer cells.
