Fletcher Allen Cares for Matters of the Heart

As an academic medical center, our mission is to find new ways to solve health-related problems. We’re proud to be one of only 45 hospitals chosen to participate in a medical trial called TAVI (transcatheter aortic valve implantation), a revolutionary treatment for aortic stenosis, a common heart disease.

Aortic stenonis restricts blood flow from the heart to the rest of the body. When aortic stenosis becomes severe and symptoms develop, it is life-threatening. According to research, without effective treatment, as many as 50 percent of aortic stenosis patients with severe symptoms die within one year.  Approximately 100,000 Americans and 300,000 people worldwide have been diagnosed with severe aortic stenosis; close to one-third of these patients are deemed too high risk for open-heart surgery.

Fletcher Allen’s TAVI research team of University of Vermont Medical Group specialists, led by Dr. Harold Dauerman and Dr. Joseph Schmoker, are studying whether a new treatment can be approved for use in the U.S. Read about Fletcher Allen’s New Heart Surgery Clinical Trial (TAVI) >>
