Shoulder Injuries
Fletcher Allen Sports Medicine will help you get back on the court, on the slopes or in the game.
Sports injuries affect people at all stages of life — and at all levels of activity. Whether you are a professional competitor, a recreational athlete or a weekend warrior, these injuries can prevent you from engaging in your favorite activities, and keep you on the sidelines.
Fletcher Allen Sports Medicine offers expert clinical care for sports-related injuries of all types — from the best diagnostic services to state-of-the-art medical and surgical care to in-depth rehabilitative therapies. Some of the injuries we treat include:
- Chronic Shoulder Instability
- Rotator Cuff Tears
- Shoulder Joint Tear
- Burners and Stingers
- Elbow Dislocation
- Shoulder Dislocation
- Shoulder Impingement
- Shoulder Separation
Rotator Cuff Tears
Rotator cuff tears are a common source of shoulder pain. Incidents increase with age. They are most commonly caused by tendon degeneration. Overuse of rotator cuff muscles and tendons over the years can lead to degeneration. People who play sports with repetitive overhead motions — such as baseball, tennis or rowing — are at an increased risk.
Our goal is to help you return to the sports you love, and enjoy a healthy, active life.
Shoulder Replacement
Our UVM Medical Group shoulder surgeons at the Adult Reconstructive Surgery Center offer a level of expertise only available with those who have focused specifically on shoulders, performing hundreds of shoulder surgeries each year.
Shoulder replacement — although less common than hip or knee replacement — is just as successful in relieving joint pain due to joint wear. Shoulder replacement may be recommended if you have severe arthritis.
Reverse Shoulder Replacement
This procedure is used for patients whose rotator cuff muscles have degenerated or weakened. They can no longer hold the shoulder joint intact. Arthritis is usually a factor.
The surgery is also used in cases of:
- Revisions to previous surgery
- Failed shoulder replacement
- Shoulder fractures
- Lack of a rotator cuff
