Welcome to the Spring 2013 semester of Community Medical School, a series of evening lectures where you’ll learn from the top faculty experts who teach and inspire the next generation of physicians and scientists at the University of Vermont College of Medicine and Fletcher Allen Health Care, Vermont’s academic medical center.

Each presentation reviews a current medical science topic in an easy-to-understand format, including informational handouts and a question-and-answer session following the lecture. Join us for a lecture this spring in UVM’s Carpenter Auditorium.

Classes are held Tuesday evenings* from 6:00 - 7:30 PM including a half-hour Q&A session at the Carpenter Auditorium at the UVM Given Medical Building. Plenty of parking is available.

PLEASE NOTE: Pre-registration helps us plan for the evening's lecture; it does not guarantee seating. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

May 14 - Cancer and Exercise: Improving Physical Function and Cardiopulmonary Health During and After TreatmentRegister

Kim Dittus, M.D., Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Medicine, and Susan Lakoski, M.D., Assistant Professor of Medicine

Cancer and cancer therapy can significantly impair physical function and cardiopulmonary health. This decline can occur during cancer therapy and may continue long after therapy is completed. Discuss the impact of the toxicities of cancer therapy on the cardiopulmonary system and how this leads to loss of physical function. Learn how exercise training can diminish these effects, and review a model of oncology rehabilitation used at Fletcher Allen Health Care both during and after cancer treatment.
