New Radiation Therapy Facility Dedicated at Fletcher Allen Health Care
BURLINGTON, VT – Approximately 150 people participated in today’s dedication of the new $19 million radiation therapy facility at Fletcher Allen Health Care’s Medical Center Campus.
Named the Garden Pavilion in recognition of a rooftop garden, the 23,000-square-foot one-story building brings together all of Fletcher Allen’s radiation oncology services in one location and is located next to the Vermont Cancer Center, providing connectivity between the two areas for patients and providers. Approximately 800 patients are treated annually in this facility.
A patient user group provided valuable input on the development of the new facility, which will greatly enhance the patient care experience for the people who come here for care from Vermont and Northern New York. Key features include:
- Increased Privacy: Each treatment area has two exam rooms and two private changing rooms – complete with personal restrooms and lockers. The changing rooms are located directly across from the treatment rooms, providing patients with convenient access to treatment.
- More Space: The new space – immediately adjacent to the parking garage - is approximately two-and-a-half times larger than the old facility, and includes all examination and treatment space in one location.
- Enhanced Aesthetics: The facility has been designed to maximize the use of natural daylight through the strategic placement of windows and skylights.
Leading Edge Technology
The facility offers the latest approaches to tumor localization, care planning and treatment – including two new, state-of-the-art linear accelerators which are used to administer radiation treatment.
A “Green” Building
Fletcher Allen is aiming to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for the Garden Pavilion. As part of those efforts, the new facility was built into the hillside of the East side of the Ambulatory Care Center to reduce the need for heating and cooling year-round. The building also includes:
- Natural lighting to reduce energy use and provide a sense of connection to the outdoors
- Efficient lighting and innovative heating and cooling systems designed to reduce energy consumption
- Plumbing fixtures that reduce water usage
- Use of recycled, low chemical-emitting, and locally sourced construction materials to improve indoor air quality
- A “green” roof with accessible public space, a vegetable garden and plantings to reduce heat build-up and storm water run-off
