(BURLINGTON, VT)  Fletcher Allen Health Care and the University of Vermont Foundation announced that Kevin McAteer has been appointed chief development officer for Health Sciences, effective December 9. McAteer is the first person to hold this newly-created position. He will be responsible for directing all aspects of fundraising for Fletcher Allen and its Foundation, the University of Vermont College of Medicine, the University of Vermont College of Nursing and Health Sciences, and the Vermont Cancer Center.

McAteer will report jointly to John Brumsted, M.D., president and chief executive officer of Fletcher Allen and Richard Bundy, chief executive officer of The UVM Foundation.  He will also work closely with Frederick C. Morin III, M.D., dean of the College of Medicine, and Patricia Prelock, Ph.D., dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. He will lead a 22-person development and alumni relations team and oversee a budget of $2.8 million. McAteer will also serve as the executive director of the Fletcher Allen Foundation and will be a member of both the UVM Foundation and Fletcher Allen executive teams.

The Fletcher Allen Foundation and the UVM Foundation are responsible for the fundraising activities of their respective organizations.

“This is another milestone in the partnership between Fletcher Allen and UVM,” said Dr. Brumsted. “In this position, Kevin will strengthen the existing collaborative relationships between our organizations and seek new linkages through philanthropic opportunities. His successful career in academic medicine will be an enormous asset to our medical center. I am excited that he has accepted this position.”

“In his role as chief development officer for Health Sciences, Kevin will be able to use the strengths of both the University and Fletcher Allen to create new and exciting opportunities for donors,” said Bundy. “Philanthropy plays a critical part in the financial well-being of both organizations, and it creates opportunities for people in the communities we serve to enhance health care services for all through charitable giving.”

McAteer most recently served as executive director of Development, Health Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco. During six years with that institution he also served as the director of Development for their Department of Medicine and for their Diabetes Center.

Prior to his west coast experience, McAteer enjoyed a successful career in university fundraising in the east, including nine years at Middlebury College where he served as the senior development officer and then as director of Principal Gifts.

McAteer holds a bachelor of arts degree in English from Seton Hall University, South Orange, NJ, and a master’s degree in English from the University of Vermont.  He also attended the Middlebury College Bread Loaf School of English and Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference.
