Howard Schapiro, MD Named as Interim President of UVM Medical Group

(BURLINGTON, VT) Howard Schapiro, MD, an anesthesiologist at Fletcher Allen Health Care and associate professor at the University of Vermont College of Medicine, has been selected to serve as interim president of the UVM Medical Group and interim senior associate dean of Clinical Affairs at the College. He will serve in these roles while a national search is conducted to replace Paul Taheri, MD, MBA who recently left for a leadership position at Yale University.
Anesthesiologist and associate professor David Adams, MD, will assume Dr. Schapiro’s roles as Anesthesiology Health Care Service leader at Fletcher Allen and chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at the College of Medicine on an interim basis.
Dr. Schapiro received his medical degree at UVM and completed his residencies in surgery and anesthesiology at what was then was known as the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont. Dr. Schapiro also completed a fellowship in obstetric anesthesia at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City before returning to UVM/Fletcher Allen. He has led Anesthesiology at Fletcher Allen and the College of Medicine for the past 15 years.
Dr. Schapiro has been actively involved in the UVM Medical Group since its formation, most recently serving as chair of the Finance Committee. He is also treasurer of the Fletcher Allen Medical Staff and secretary/treasurer of the Vermont Medical Society.
