BURLINGTON, VT – Fletcher Allen' drive to become one of the greenest health care organizations in the country was recognized this month with awards from two national organizations and the State of Vermont.
For the second year in a row, Fletcher Allen was selected to be in the "Environmental Leadership Circle" by Practice Greenhealth, the nation' leading association devoted to environmentally responsible health care. The Leadership Circle awards are given to institutions that have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to reducing the environmental footprint of their operations. In 2009, Fletcher Allen increased recycling to 34% of its waste stream, up from 21% in 2007. Electric use at the Medical Center Campus dropped8% from FY 2008 to 2009.
"All of our members are committed to improving health care's environmental performance, but Fletcher Allen belongs to a select group of facilities setting the highest standards," said Practice Greenhealth Executive Director Anna Gilmore Hall.
Also this month, Fletcher Allen was one of four Vermont organizations to receive the Governor' Award for Environmental Excellence in Earth Stewardship & Resource Protection. This award recognizes projects with "measurable and direct benefits to air, land or water – or fish, wildlife and human communities dependent upon a clean and healthy environment." The award citation noted organization-wide projects to improve the environmental impact of Fletcher Allen, including a commitment to local and sustainable food.
Programs to make commuting easier for employees earned Fletcher Allen a repeat award as one of the Best Workplaces for Commuters by the National Center for Transit Research at the University of Florida (www.bestworkplaces.org).
The designation – which is shared with the Campus Area Transportation Management Authority (CATMA) – recognizes employers who meet the Environmental Protection Agency national standard of excellence for offering outstanding commuter benefits. These promote energy conservation by reducing traffic congestion and related air pollution.
Among commuter programs available to Fletcher Allen employees are the Bike/Walk Rewards Program, Carpool Matching Service, Emergency Ride Home, discounted bus passes and alternative commuting incentives.
"These awards reflect the commitment of all the Fletcher Allen employees who have worked hard to make our operations greener," said Melinda L. Estes, M.D., President and CEO. "I'm proud that we are being recognized as an environmental role model both locally and nationally, and I'm committed to continuing our efforts to further reduce our environmental impact."
