BURLINGTON, VT – Fletcher Allen’s commitment to become one of the greenest health care organizations in the country was recognized this week with an award from the nation's leading association devoted to environmentally responsible health care.

For the fourth year in a row, Fletcher Allen was selected to be in the “Environmental Leadership Circle” by Practice Greenhealth. The Leadership Circle awards are given to institutions that have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to reducing the environmental footprint of their operations.  Between 2007 and 2011, Fletcher Allen has increased its annual recycling by more than 60 percent to 1,160 tons. Electric use at the Medical Center Campus dropped 2 percent in 2011.

“We’re incredibly proud of the green initiatives at Fletcher Allen, and are committed to continuing our efforts to further reduce our environmental impact,” said Sandra Felis, senior vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer of Fletcher Allen Health Care. “This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of many Fletcher Allen employees who have helped make our organization an environmental role model and a leader in green health care.”

The Leadership Circle awards are given to institutions that have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to reducing the environmental footprint of their operations, including environmentally-friendly practices and sustainability.  Fletcher Allen participates in dozens of  pro-environment initiatives, including seeking out environmentally-friendly products for use in maintaining and cleaning its facilities, selecting sustainable food choices and composting.

“This Award demonstrates Fletcher Allen’s commitment to their community to protect public health and preserve the environment,” said Laura Wenger, RN, Executive Director of Practice Greenhealth. “Fletcher Allen is truly demonstrating leadership for the future of health care.”
