Twelve Physicians Considered Within the Top 1% Nationally in Their Field
Six Specialties and Electronic Medical Record Highly Ranked
BURLINGTON VT – Twenty-three physicians and six specialty areas at Fletcher Allen Health Care have been recognized by U.S. News and World Report magazine as being the best in Vermont and northern New York for 2011. Half of the 23 physicians were ranked within the top 1% in their specialties nationally. The academic medical center was also honored for being one of the leading hospitals in the nation in the adoption of electronic medical records.
Those making the publication’s “Top Doctors” list span 15 specialty areas and were selected based on a peer nominating process. (see complete list below).
Six adult specialty areas were ranked as “High Performing.” They are: Ear, Nose & Throat, Gastroenterology, Gynecology, Nephrology, Neurology & Neurosurgery, and Orthopedics. To earn this distinction, performance must be competitive with the level of nationally ranked U.S. News Best Hospitals.
U.S. News and World Report (USN&WR) surveyed nearly 10,000 specialists and sifted through data for almost 5,000 hospitals to rank the best in 16 adult specialties, from cancer to urology. Death rates, patient safety, and hospital reputation were a few of the factors considered.
Electronic Health Record System Among Best in the Nation
In national rankings by USN&WR, Fletcher Allen landed in the top 3.5% of hospitals that, in the view of the magazine, places it “in the vanguard of centers leading medicine into the era of electronic medical records” earning it a place on the “Most Connected” list. This year, only 118 hospitals nationwide made this list, and Fletcher Allen was the only hospital in Vermont, New Hampshire and upstate New York to do so.
USN&WR defines a hospital as Most Connected if it has met twin standards: achieving a very high level of electronic medical record (EMR) adoption according to Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society standards, and earning either a national Best Hospital ranking or a high-performing designation in one or more medical specialties.
“Recognition from this widely-regarded publication is the latest acknowledgement of Fletcher Allen’s excellence in providing safe, high quality patient care,” said Sandra Dalton, R.N. senior vice president for Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer. “We’re very proud to be able to bring nationally ranked physicians, advanced specialty care and leading edge technology to the people of Vermont and northern New York.”
All of Fletcher Allen’s patient services are now linked together through its electronic medical record system, which was initialized in June 2009 within the inpatient areas, pharmacy and the Emergency Department. By the December 2010, all of its clinic sites and patient services were part of the system.
From the patients’ perspective, the most visible use of technology is when they are visiting their physicians. Doctors have electronic access to their patients’ medical records – including radiology images, laboratory reports, clinic notes, medications, discharge notes and summaries of previous visits to any physician in the Fletcher Allen system.
