Vermont Children's Hospital and Kohl's Team Up to Support Bike Safety for Kids

Vermont Children’s Hospital at Fletcher Allen and Kohl’s Department Store celebrated their ongoing Kohl’s Keeps Kids Safe partnership at University Mall’s well-attended Halloween party, with giveaways, bike safety information, and a formal check presentation.

This event gives families a safe way to celebrate this holiday, which annually has a high number of childhood pedestrian injuries.

Gerry Wheeler, store manager of Kohl’s South Burlington store, was on hand to present a check for $28,834 to representatives from Vermont Children’s Hospital including chief of pediatrics Dr. Lewis First, Monty the Moose, Injury Prevention Coordinator Stacy Jordan and representatives from Local Motion’s Bike Smart Program.

Since 2005, Kohl’s Cares has donated $145,281 to the Vermont Children’s Hospital at Fletcher Allen for a variety of initiatives, including: ski helmet safety (PHAT Protect your Head at All Times), bike helmet distribution to schools, car seats and ATV safety programming.

During the 2011/2012 school year, Kohl’s Cares funding will support Bike Smart, a  bike skills training program managed by Local Motion, a Burlington non-profit promoting safe biking, walking, running, and skating.  These monies will help up to ten grade schools in Vermont participate in the program.  The program will loan each school the Bike Smart bike trailer full of bikes, helmets and other equipment for a period of 1-2 weeks, with a goal of providing a total of 500 students with bike safety skills during gym classes or after-school programs.

In June 2012, the Kohl’s Keeps Kids Safe team is planning another child safety event at University Mall, including car seat inspections, bike helmet fittings, ATV safety demonstrations, and other fun activities.  More details to follow.
