Lactation

Lactation Services

The American Academy of Pediatrics, the World Health Organization, The Center for Disease Control, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the College of Nurse-Midwifery states that all babies should be breastfed exclusively for the first 6 months of age and then breastfed along with solid foods until 1 year and longer as long as the mother and baby desire.  The nurse-midwives feel strongly that women who choose to breastfeed should have adequate support to succeed at this very important piece of motherhood.

Each nurse-midwife will support and educate women as they begin their breastfeeding experience.  Marti Churchill is a Board Certified Lactation Consultant offering lactation services to those women who have breastfeeding difficulties.  Women who are planning to breastfeed for the first time or have had difficulties breastfeeding in the past are encouraged to attend our prenatal breastfeeding class and/or schedule a prenatal visit with us to discuss your individual needs.  A lactation visit can be made if problems arise after breastfeeding has been initiated.

Reasons to seek help with breastfeeding:

  • Sore or painful nipples – with or without cracking or blisters on nipples.
  • Difficulty getting the baby to latch onto breast.
  • Engorgement that does not resolve in 24 hours.
  • Sore lumps, redness, red streaks, or pain within the breast  (may also have a fever).
  • Feeling an inadequate milk supply or an over abundance of milk.
  • Poor  infant weight gain / sleepy baby.
  • Questions or support for continuation of breastfeeding after returning to work.
  • Any reason you feel breastfeeding isn’t working for you.
