The Telemedicine Program at Fletcher Allen Health Care and the University of Vermont College of Medicine provides regional access to high-quality emergency and trauma care, medical consultation and education for health care providers, students, employees and patients. The program has been recognized as one of the top ten telemedicine programs in the country by Telemedicine and Telehealth Networks magazine. Telemedicine refers to the electronic transfer of medical information. In its simplest form, telemedicine can mean a telephone call conveying information about a patient. Today, it involves the use of two-way interactive video to allow the patient, the local provider and the specialist to interact and develop a care plan, without having to transfer the patient to a more specialized care center. By bringing specialty medicine to patients throughout Vermont and northern New York, telemedicine helps Fletcher Allen provide a communications network for the exchange of medical information across the region. This is especially important in treating patients in rural areas, who otherwise would not have access to specialists at an academic medical center. Through its teletrauma program, Fletcher Allen/UVM College of Medicine surgeons have direct video access to the emergency rooms of community hospitals and are available to consult on cases 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Telemedicine also is used to provide course lectures and educational offerings for students and physicians from around the region. Most recently, the department has been involved in testing the use of interactive video in a moving ambulance -- a project called FAST STAR (Fletcher Allen Specialized Telemedicine for Supporting Transport And Rescue) -- allowing specialists to consult with emergency medical technicians and paramedics en route to the hospital.
