Overview

University of Vermont logoThe University of Vermont College of Medicine, the seventh oldest medical school in the country, was established in 1822 and has a long tradition of graduating physicians known for their superlative clinical skills.

The ever-increasing missions of education, research, and service have meant steady enlargement of the faculty and improvements in the academic and research facilities. The College of Medicine is nationally and internationally recognized for research activities, ranking in the top half of all medical schools in terms of federal support for research. Currently, there are 380 students enrolled in the College of Medicine, whose faculty now numbers nearly 1,370 members.

Vermont Children's Hospital logoIn addition to its primary education and research missions, the College of Medicine also acts as a resource for the State of Vermont, providing supportive programs to health care providers throughout the region. In conjunction with the state legislature, the College of Medicine is developing programs to encourage more graduates to enter primary care and remain in Vermont to practice medicine.

Fletcher Allen Health Care is an integrated health care delivery system that unites the former entities of the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont, Fanny Allen Hospital, and University Health Center in alliance with the University of Vermont. Fletcher Allen Health Care was created on January 1, 1995 and serves the 850,000 people of Vermont and Northern New York. As one of the most comprehensive, non-profit health care organizations in New England, Fletcher Allen's mission is to improve the health of the people in the communities it serves while improving the quality, cost, and accessibility of health care for these communities. Fletcher Allen will continue the founding organizations' legacy for treating patients with genuine care and compassion. Linked with the University of Vermont's Division of Health Sciences, the hospitals are vital training sites for the next generation of physicians, nurses and other health professionals.

On February 4, 2002 pediatric services were renamed Vermont Children's Hospital at Fletcher Allen Health Care--a designation awarded to us for having worked for more than half a century creating programs and partnerships throughout Vermont and upstate New York that have resulted in our ability to provide total comprehensive pediatric care to children and families. Simultaneously with the awarding of our new name, we opened a totally renovated in-patient floor that is child-friendly and family-centered resulting in almost all private rooms, a step-down transition nursery for graduates of our neonatal intensive care unit, and a Ronald McDonald House Family Room that has been heralded by families and staff as truly meeting everyone's needs.
