Research
Research focuses on surgical strategies designed to optimize outcomes after mitral valve surgery. Studies from our group demonstrate the clear advantage of mitral valve repair rather than valve replacement in patients with mitral regurgitation. Results have delineated the negative impact on heart function seen after mitral valve replacement surgery. Recent research directions include elucidation of mechanisms responsible for ischemic mitral regurgitation and the use of biomarkers to identify patients at risk for serious adverse clinical events.
Research efforts are largely translational and range from those designed to apply laboratory techniques to improve treatment to clinical studies evaluating the efficacy of novel therapeutic agents and combinations.
