Education
A major focus of The Adult Congenital Heart Disease and Pulmonary Hypertension Program at the University of Vermont College of Medicine and Fletcher Allen Health Care is the education of cardiovascular fellows. Dr. William Hopkins, the Director of the Adult Congenital Heart Disease and Pulmonary Hypertension Program and the Adult Down Syndrome Program at the University of Vermont College of Medicine, is a four-time recipient of the E.L. Amidon Award for Teaching Excellence from the Department of Medicine.
A comprehensive set of lectures and case presentations are given by Dr. Hopkins to the fellows each year to enhance their understanding of the unique physiology, anatomy, and hemodynamics found in adults with congenital heart disease, pulmonary hypertension, and genetic heart disease. In their third clinical year, Fellows are encouraged to attend the Adult Congenital Heart Disease and Pulmonary Hypertension Clinic.
Cardiovascular fellows are exposed to diagnostic testing such as echocardiography in these patients. They become familiar with the novel treatments for patients such as intravenous Flolan, subcutaneous Remodulin, and oral Tracleer. They can participate in ongoing research projects as well as formulate and implement new projects.
