Introduction

The field of medicine is undergoing a striking metamorphosis. Burgeoning technology, an aging population, economic constraints, and health care reform are among the many forces impinging upon medicine in general and pathology in particular. Inevitably change breeds uncertainty, but also presents remarkable opportunities. For example, increasingly, pathologists are expected to interact with patients and their physicians at the bedside, interpreting a complex array of data to resolve difficult medical problems. At the same time, hospital administrators turn to pathologists to provide leadership in applying advanced diagnostic techniques in the most cost-effective manner.

In the academic arena, pathologists in research laboratories explore the fundamental mechanisms of disease, while disseminating the most advanced concepts of etiology and pathogenesis to their students, residents, and colleagues. In short, the field of pathology offers the essential ingredients for a satisfying professional career, uniting the fields of science and service to the community at the highest level.

Pathology training programs must respond to the challenges posed by this changing environment. At Vermont we offer a dynamic, broad-based program of training in anatomic, clinical, and experimental pathology. Pathology residents are an integral part of the medical care team, accepting increasing responsibility as their experience expands. Our training programs in anatomic and clinical pathology are integrated, emphasizing the unified nature of the information developed and interpreted by pathologists. Much of this effort is focused on the care of individual patients. Abundant opportunities are available for residents to participate in the department's research programs, which address problems of contemporary interest and importance. Finally, residents are actively engaged in the department's teaching programs. Indeed, a tradition of excellence in teaching at all levels is a cornerstone of the department's activities.

We believe that our program offers a unique blend of core training and electives which ensures a broad, thorough education in the major disciplines of pathology while retaining sufficient flexibility to meet the needs of each individual. When residents and fellows complete their training they are well-prepared to meet the challenges of the new millenium. Overview

The Pathology Department of the University of Vermont College of Medicine and Fletcher Allen Health Care offers a combined training program leading to board qualification in anatomic and clinical pathology.

The Pathology Department, which includes 30 full-time faculty members, is responsible for the management of all of the anatomic pathology and clinical laboratory services provided by Fletcher Allen Health Care (FAHC), Vermont's Academic Medical Center. This includes laboratory services for many hospitals and physician practice groups throughout Vermont and New York State.

The faculty is also responsible for teaching pathology to medical students and undergraduates in the allied health sciences. In addition, the department has developed a diverse research program with a budget of several million dollars annually.

Currently, the department accepts up to 17 residents and fellows. Customarily, we accept 3-4 new house staff each year. The majority of our applicants are enrolled in the National Residents Matching Program, and ERAS. In addition, the department offers fellowship training in surgical pathology, cytopathology, and environmental pathology.
